I am interested in a side pipe exhaust system and need to know the advantages/disadvantages of converting from a stock 1981 system. I have been looking at a system from jet-hot. Is this a good product for the money.
The Jet Hot is probably a ceramic coated set of Hooker sidepipes.
Advantages:
Looks (subjective)
"Cleans" up the underside of your car and makes some repairs easier (ie dropping tranny)
Disadvantages:
Stock mufflers are restrictive (Can be fixed cheaply with some slightly fabricated glasspacks or auger mufflers ($50) or expensively with JCL baffles)
May burn you or your passenger's leg when getting in/out
Fairly expensive, unless the entire exhaust from manifolds back needs to be replaced
The performance of the JCL's are hands down the best sidepipe mufflers available. Go to his website to read some of the testimonials :yesnod: . http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/customers.php
Thanks for the response to my first post on the forum. I checked out the testimonials on the site and am ordering them tommorrow. Hopefully the side pipes will arrive soon and I won't have any problems with the install. Does anyone have tips for putting these on an 81 model. :chevy
Go search (archived and new posts) in the C3 section. I have seen some
posts on the install lately. I think there is a small piece that needs to be
trimmed from the fiberglass body - don't take my word for it.
Anyway, it sounded minor.
You might consider saving the stock exhaust for inspection time - if it's any issue there.
The spiral turbo site has some nice looking heat shields that mount up and look good to me.
Welcome to the forum - and good luck.
If you can get a digital cam - and post the pics of the job - you'll be giving
back to the next person that wants to put pipes up.
Hey Jonathan, If you don't mind me asking, where did you order them - and ow much ?
I've been thinking sidepipes for the future, but I've heard prices up to 1800 for
a Hooker setup - headers pipes mufflers.
:seeya
I ordered the pipes from jet-hot. The price was $1025 for headers, pipes, gaskets and the mounting hardware. This includes the sterling coating as well as shipment to the 48 states. It would be an additional $100 to get the reverse flow mufflers from jet-hot or $300 for the turbo baffles from JCL. I plan on keeping the stock exhaust, but am not too worried about emmisions. :blueangel:
Does the performance of the JCL baffles justify the extra $300.
Not in my opinion, but they are probably the only ones which don't take away performance and are direct replacements (ie. no fabrication).
I put in 2.5" perferated (holes, not the "punched in" type) core tube glasspack mufflers. I bought just the core tubes and some fiberglass from a custom muffler company. I then expanded and welded the original Hooker glasspack end disks to my new core tubes. Wrapped the fiberglass around it and slid it in the tube just like the Hooker mufflers. Total cost was $15 per tube, $10 in fiberglass, and $30 for a muffler shop to expand and weld the disks on. So, total was $70 and I have stainless core tubes and enough fiberglass to re-wrap the mufflers if needed.
I seriously doubt that they are holding me back any over a performance muffler, as it's pretty much the same design as some of the "race" mufflers out there.
Does the performance of the JCL baffles justify the extra $300.
I think so... I picked up 2 tenths and 3 Mph with the Spiral turbo baffles - thats over the Hooker Glass packs.... I think it's a great mod for the money. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: If I can get two more tenths for 300 bucks count me in!!!! :smash:

Re: side exhaust (JNB81)
One of the problems you're going to have is where do you put the cats?
If you have an '81 without cats you could be asking for a lot of trouble from the smog cops.
I no longer have the computer on my 81. The cat has already been removed along with all of the other emissions stuff. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for not running a cat or being too loud. I may be wrong but I don't think I will have to worry about this.
