Default Stock L82 Q-jet neutral idle vacuum?

Just got done putting headers and true dual's on. I had de-smogged eng yrs back richened up the pri jet and richer sec mtrg rods one step,so I thought I'd go back thru adjusting neutral idle and 2 frt a/scrs. Somewhere I read the Q-jet needs 14"of solid vacuum at idle for the pwr pist to close otherwise the idle will be rich.. Well after adj the a/scrs I'm right at 14" @ 875-900 rpm in park, sound about right guys? Hdal

For a stock L82 with stock cam 14" is really low. You might want to start by checking your timing to make sure you have enough advance. For a bone stock L82 you should be in the 18" to 21" range at idle.

the amount of vacuum will also be determined by your timing. So what is your initial timing with the vacuum advance disconnected?
There were a number of different power valve springs used over the years.
The 14" reading is low, have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Initial adv is 14degrees with vac plugged. Pwr pist sprg is stk, maybe weak after 38yrs! Eng runs strong,a little loppy at idle, just wanted to tweak the a/scrs a bit.Headers haven't changed color and heat seems bout the same. All the vac accessories work as should so I don't think there is a leak,but....... Hdal

You do realize you adjust the mixture screws on an automatic equipped car in Drive with the parking brake on and wheels chocked?

Wow,no never did it that way. I just re-timed car, bumped timing to 38 degrees total, reset a/scrs,picked up 100rpm at idle and 2"of vacuum. Test ride was great,no pinging and she scoots! Hdal
