Just got a replacement hood insulation for my '73. It has a firm "backing", but I'm not sure if that firm side should face the engine or away from it. Seems like it would make it more durable to face the engine, but may not be ideal as a sound insulator that way. Don't have the old insulation material to know which way it went...
SOFT fluffy side down next to engine compartment..but it looks pretty symmetrical..My rep under hood insulation with flat attachments only fit properly with fluffy side on engine side..Sounds a bit counterintuitive but what instructions came with it from whence you bought it?How do you plan on attaching it to hood underside?jim
I'm with Jim---saw a couple of cars this past weekend that are Survivor's and the soft side was facing down
yes..when I replaced the insulation on my '78, the original was intact..just old..I looked at the new one and initially thought the smoother side should be down..but ..when I compared it to the original and saw the cut outs..it really only would fit properly..short of scissor work..with the fluffy side down My '78 had little plastic grommets that one pushed gently thru the insulation once in place and then 1.5" or so diameter thin washer-retainers snapped onto them to keep it secure..No adhesive used on original or replacement at least on mine..Jim
Yes, I agree soft side down on the reproductions. One of the above threads asked how to hold the 73 insulation on? You use 11 of the flat metal attaching washers pictured below. They snap over the 11 pins mounted under the hood. I still have my original also, albeit showing its age.
FWIW ,original 73 hood insulation was thicker and has molded inset areas. These are very expensive. I also included a photo below. I was only able to find one at Dr. Rebuild's for $375.00. If anyone's looking.
FWIW, I bought my ne under hood insulation and mtg hdw from Ecklers. They show the one for '73-75 also..The insulation part # is..Part #: 25-120280-1..IT and the 11 pc mtg kit are less than 60.00 for both ..Jim
I ordered the one in the photos from Willcox. Definitely not as thick as the one Tooch1 posted from DocRebuild. I'd love to have that one, but I've got a few other, more pressing items to spend that money on....
Thanks to everyone for the info! Looks like fluffy side down is the consensus - I didn't even think to look a the cutouts - probably only goes one way correctly.
I need to order replacement hood insulation for my 79 in the next two weeks; some sites have the insulation above with the circular cut-out; some are solid filled and don't have the cut-out. They all says they're for a 79....
Anyone know which you're supposed to use or would have originally come with the 79 L82 hood? Why do the two different versions exist?

your under hood insulation even with a dual snorkel L82 air cleaner should not have the center cut out..76-79 all the same including hold down hdw....Does the inside of your hood have the retaining pin s that hold the insulation snug to the underside of the hood still in place?Jim
