Body shops remove the tag to do repairs and reinstall it when the repair is done. They do it on a regular basis. It is a felony to change the number, if you are putting the same number back on you are not changing or altering it.it may be a technical violation but there is no criminal intent.if you live in that much fear consult an attorney. if you ask the police or a states attorney they wil almost invariably say you cant, likely they don't really know.
