HI
I'm putting a 700r4 into my 74 which had a TH400. I have the transmissions laying side by side. The 700r4 is 30 3/4" and the TH400
is 29 1/8" so it looks like I need to have my driveline cut 1 5/8".
Has anyone done this and if so does that sound about right?
Thanks for any input.
i just did my 73 last month,if you want ill measure it for you,but id rather see you put it in first then cut it.But ill measure it if you want me too.

That's the best advice you will get.
Take your own measurements AFTER the 700R4 is installed. Then you will know for sure how much to have the drive shaft shortened.
your thinking is correct, the only thing changing in this case is the trans, the back of the motor is right were it's always been and the differential didn't move to a new location,so the only variable is the length of the trans. i lined up my th350 and my 700r4 b/4 install, 700r4 was 3 inches longer than my th350 and that is the amount i had the driveshaft shortened. to be on the safe side install the trans and then measure.
