Has anyone ever removed the core to lubricate it without removing
the cable from the back of the speedometer? I have the two piece
cable and was curious why the only method has been to remove the
cable from the speedometer and remove the core from that end.
Thought I would ask as it seems that would be easier than removing
the dash.
I see no reason why you couldn't approach it from that end. Just remember to not over lubricate because you do not want anything entering the speedometer head.
Some cables have a stopper on them so they'll only slide out of one side of the casing but yeah, you can lube it that way. Everyone has their way of lubing the cable but I use axle gear lube. It seems to stay on the cable and soak in.
Thanks guys. I thought someone may have removed the core this way
before. Guess I will give it a try and see if it works. A lot easier than
going under the dash.
Correct. The plastic 'lug' at the speedometer end prevents it from being pulled thru the cable jacket in the other direction. It only comes out from the speedo end. Likewise, the first section of cable must be removed from the junction point of the two cables.
BTW, the purpose of that 2-section run of speedo cable is to eliminate the problems of 'cable whipping' inside of a single length of cable. The junction point of the two cables provides a point of support for each end of the two shorter cables. I have the same design in my '71 coupe and have tried to replace the 2-section run with a single, long cable....without good success.

Correct. The plastic 'lug' at the speedometer end prevents it from being pulled thru the cable jacket in the other direction.
The lower cable from the transmission has the male end at the trans
and the female plastic end at the junction end that can only be pulled
from that end. I see the the upper cable has a male end on both ends.
Does the upper cable also have some kind of keeper that prevents it
from pulling thru from the end opposite the speedometer?
