Column mount play

Column mount play
Noticed some serious play in my steering column. Seems I can't tighten the "sliding block", arrow, enough to reduce the gap. This leaves room to slide back and forth. Anyone know a fix that doesn't include welding ?

OK...without getting my head chopped off here.
In the illustration you posted. PART #8 moves. SO you can adjust it to raise or lower the plate so your column can attach to it.
Actually..what you call a 'sliding block' 'is not supposed to slide...IF you are referring to the two aluminum parts that go onto your column...that PART # 5 (the bolt) goes into.
I always make sure that PART #7 (the nuts) that hold the column to the firewall plate...are really close to being tight so I know I have the column as far forward as the firewall will allow...then I adjust the plate (pt #8) to set it to the speedo/tach dash panel.

Thank you for the reply.
Yes, that is what I experience. The alu block moves when I steer. It isn't a little. I have tightened every bolt there is! Without bolts and column the alu block slide freely. I notice on some pictures some yellow/brown residu on the alu block. I checked mine and there are traces. Any idea what that is?

IF the aluminum block slides onto the steering column as it should...and they should fit rather snugly....and it is bolted to PART#8. AND you have the steering column TIGHT at the firewall....then you column technically CANNOT MOVE. BUT I ALSO would check part #'s 2 and 7 and make sure they are tight. IF they are....the only thing I can think of is that you have the wrong bolts holding the aluminum blocks to PART #8...and the bolts have a shoulder on them....thus NOT allowing you to actually tighten the aluminum block to PART #8.

Another point to remember is keeping the column and the rag joint/steering box in a straight line. The under dash and firewall braces cannot simply be bolted in place. Read Jim Shea's papers on steering column installation.

Cajos- I like your warning sign. How's that work with women who want to lean on the car?

I installed a steeroids r&p kit. So the u joints don't provide a solid point. Resulting that the only fixed point is the mount on the firewall.
Would it be harmfull to fix the alu block solid to the bracket?
As far as the warning sign, no one leanson my vette 😀. Not much ladies in the workshop/mancave

The aluminum blocks (we called them capsules) were installed on the column bracket and molten plastic was injected to hold them in place.
Obviously the plastic that held your capsules in place on the column bracket has been sheared. I would think that a small dab of epoxy glue could be used to just hold your capsules on the bracket in place of the plastic.

Nit picking
Took the column apart today. I wasn't happy with the assembly qualtity. The spacing was off. I found a dirt in the column and bearings. Also the trust cap was crushed. Now I'm looking for a new thrust cap but can't find it. Any one know where i can order one?
