74 ignition cylinder won't spring back from start.
I have read a lot of posts and cannot find one that talks about my issue.
When I put the cylinder into start, the starter engages and starts the engine no problem.
The problem is the cylinder won't spring back to the run position when I let go of the key.
At first I thought it was the ignition cylinder, but I have the column out of the car to deal with installing steeriods, and I noticed a rod that moves down outside of the column. Maybe my problem isn't the cylinder.
Anyone have any ideas?
Also I notice a capacitor mounted to the Steering column and the wire has broken off. not sure what this is.
If your cylinder isn't springing back from the start position, it sounds like you just need a new ignition switch. It's located on the column down at the end of that rod that you say runs down the outside. The switch has an internal spring in it and sounds like yours has bought the farm. New switch about $30 or so if I remember correctly. Good luck.

Mine would stick a bit, so I put a thin layer of WD40 on my key and ran in in/out, forward and back a few times. Never had a problem since. You may want to try that before you tear your column apart?
the old switches get gummed up, remove the switch, not the key lock.
easy way hose it down inside with wd 40,
better method , disassemble and clean regrease it and reassemble,
or buy replacement switch.
throw that old capacitor away. they become a fire hazard with age.
not needed with modern radio's.
