Default Muncie M21 no reverse

1969 big block
I just installed my new back to factory exhaust and was finally going to take the car for a quick spin.
To remove the headers I took out the clutch/transmission Zbar and carefully put everything back the way it was.
As I was warming up the car, I could not get the car into reverse, all other gears seem to work fine.
There were a few other posts I read but were all way beyond my knowledge not having ever pulled or set up or installed a transmission or clutch.
Any simple things I could look at.
When I unscrew the **** on the shifter and pull out the t handle, the fine rod just pulls through. Is this normal or should it be connected to something underneath.
Yes I have read and have the AIM and the shop manual but both are way beyond my knowledge at this point.
Thanks for any ideas.
Pete

The rod that goes down the shifter is just a lock-out to prevent accidental shifting into reverse.
If everything was working before the exhaust work, I would venture to say that your "Z"-bar is not installed correctly, or the clutch rod is not installed right.

Take some photos, and I am sure someone here can help

I just remembered that to install the new exhaust, I had to unbolt the transmission rubber mount to slide/install the center hangar for the exhaust (the original one was not there). Is it possible the geometry changed enough to cause this? I finally worked it into reverse and can now do it consistently but it is not easy the way it was before my exhaust work.
Has anyone had this problem?
