Hey Guys. got a 350 4 barrel 78 c3... it runs good but when I go a few miles it seem to run out of gas but it has gas in it ... pull over and restart it fire right up and drive another few mile and happens again.. any idea's .. thanks for your help
Do you have any idea how many new electronic parts fail almost immediately ? It sounds just like a weak Module.. it gets hot, dies.. wait a few minutes, starts right up.. gets hot, dies... Modules are notorious for this problem.. most of us old guys carried a spare in the Glove box.. at least until we threw that garbage out and went to a better system ... Just sayin, don t dismiss it because its new ..
Did the problem start after you installed the distributor?
Did you replace anything else besides the distributor?
Is the Distributor new and what type is it?
Are your timing settings the same is before the issue started?
Does it die at a particular throttle position or at any position? idle, cruise whatever...
Regards,
John
Hi, I had the problem for awhile started working on it and can't figure it out I put a new distributor in I thought that fix but no.. its odd starts and runs great all kinds of power but cant go past a few miles then it just quits pump the gas and get a little farther and then stops... restart it.. it runs great for another few miles and same thing if you can think of anything let me know... thanks for your time.. John

Check the fuel delivery. Filter, pressure, volume. This could be a failing pump, clogged filter.
So it dies, you pull over and crank it and it fires right up, all within about 2-3 minutes?
After it dies, does it have to spin over a few times before it fires up? That might indicate it is filling the fuel bowl up.
If I dont drive my car for a week, the fuel will evaporate out of the bowl and I have to turn it over for a few seconds to let the pump fill the bowl again. If you fire it right up, without hitting the gas pedal, it sounds like there was fuel in the bowl.
If the bowl is empty and you hit the pedal, there could be a shot in the accelerator pump to start it and activate the fuel pump to fill the bowl again.
If the distributor is HEI, many parts stores can test them to confirm if it has failed or not.
Keep us informed on this one.

Have you done any work on the fuel pump and rubber fuel lines? If so, that's likely where your problem is. If not, it could be a defective fuel pump. If you replace that 'S' hose going to the pump, it MUST be one of the "formed" S hoses...or it must have an 'anti-collapsing' spring going around it. Using a straight piece of fuel line to substitute for the formed hose will NOT get the job done; it will pinch down in the bent areas and drastically limit fuel flow.

Hi, it restarts with a turn of the motor less than a min.. I think the fuel line is collapsing never heard of it or may be the fuel pump

Hi, I think you hit on the head... carb was rebuilt.. fuel pump work fine I think.... filter new.. it has a straight rubber hose neopreme I think... thanks for your time

The main fuel line feeds the pump through an "S" like hose. Examine this "S" hose and if it looks original and deteriorated I would replace it. This hose is a pre-formed hose, don't try to replace it with ordinary fuel line, get the pre-formed hose intended for this application.
Most of the vendors carry it, but you may be able to find it locally as well.
When it stops what happens if you remove the fuel filler cap, is there a rush of air into the tank? I have seen an instance where the fuel vent was blocked and it caused an issue like you are having.
