I have a transmission leak at the vacuum modulator as well. Can I remove the modulator and replace the seal without draining the transmission fluid or removing the transmission?
No problem. Just put a pan under it, remove the bolt holding the retaining bracket, pull the modulator out, put a new one in or just put a new "O" ring on the modulator and reverse the steps.

Re: What about the vacuum modulator? (virtue4u)
As has been mentioned, its not a big deal.
Just put a pan under it when you pull the modulator. You won't get quarts and quarts of tranny fluid draining out, but you will be surprised at how much does come out.
The first time I changed the modulator I just put some newpaper down. Good thing I had the pan nearby. Expect a quart or two.
If you have the car on ramps you'll get less leakage than if you have the car jacked up level, if the car is higher in the front the fluid in the pan will be toward the back of the car.
If I remember correctly (not always the case  ), the modulator on my TH350 is on the front/passenger side of the trans.
Make sure you check the condition of the rubber lines at each end of the tube going up to the manifold. Mine were in very poor condition (hard, cracked).
SORRY! I didn't remember correctly. My modulator IS on the rear/passenger side.
I had the front of the car on ramps, but it was on my sloped driveway, so the car was still tilted down a little towards the front. I don't recall much fluid leaking out at all. You may want to back it up the ramps.
