Default 68-72 Fire Wall Questions

1. What are the difference in the fire wall from 68 to 72?

2. What are the difference in the fire wall for A/C cars vs Non A/C?

Thanks

Jim

AC cars have a bigger hole to accommodate the evaporator housing. There is also an extra grommet (at least I think so) in the triangle cutout.

When dealing with a non ac car, you can look at the firewall insulation and you'll see a perforated line around where the heater box went... this is where this area was removed for a/c cars and also gives you an idea of where to cut if you are converting a non a/c car to a a/c car. As Duntov stated, there was also another hole in the V of the firewall (right in the middle) to accommodate the additional vacuum hoses.

Bone headed me... I pulled the front end off my 70 LT-1 conv. in the late 80's and converted it to a factory AC car... why I have no idea but now I need to convert it back... I drilled the holes, I put the covers over the left hand side vents... and I cut the opening for the heater box.. YUK.. I can't believe I did this but it is what it is now and hopefully I'll get the time to change it back later.

Hi 72,
There was just one firewall used for both cars…. with and without the a/c option.
A worker actually cut the non a/c air box opening to make it larger for the installation of the a/c system.
It was often quite crudely done.
Regards,
Alan

Here's a small part of the perforation in the firewall insulation blanket so additional areas could be removed for an a/c car.
This is the area right above the passenger's toes.

Alan,
We're the carpet grommets shown in above picture used in 1968 as well?
Mine are gone if they were present.

Hi,
Here's a pic to compare to 69V's a/c firewall.
You can see how much smaller the hole for non a/c air box is.
Also, you can see the location for the added round hole that a/c firewalls got, as 69V's pic also shows, is blank on non a/c firewalls.
Regards,
Alan

So the fire walls from 68 to 72 were the same.

AC cars had a larger hole cut for the A/C and a hole drilled in the Triangle with a grommet for a vacuum line or wire.

Standard brakes had 2 holes horizontally and power brakes had 4 holes.

Is there anything I am missing.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim,
The firewall picture I posted is for a car with standard brakes, not power brakes.
I think both both standard brake and power brake firewalls have 4 small holes placed around 1 large hole. but the LOCATION is different.

Alan

Hi Marshal,
I believe 68 cars used the black rubber carpet plugs too…..3 for each foot-well piece.
The GM part #3868790 is described as being molded on to the front of the plug in 68-70+ cars.
Later cars have plugs with a variety of numbers. (Identifying a mold?)
Also, note that the top of the carpet wasn't typically tucked under the lower insulation blanket 'flap' even though that APPEARS to be the 'flap''s purpose.
Regards,
Alan

Does anyone have pictures of the difference in the 68 steering column opening?

Thanks

Hi Jim,
I guess since the 68 doesn't have the transmission interlock system or the 'lever' on the steering column perhaps it wouldn't have the additional opening in the firewall that 69+ cars have to allow the lever to pass through?
I'd think the reinforcing plate may be different too?
Regards,
Alan

They push through a hole in the firewall. The AIM's show that all cars from 1968-1972 used the forward plugs, I'm not positive about that so I'd have to double check. The AIM in each book, 68,69,70,71,72 all show 4 plugs across each side of the forward carpet. I'll tell you this a well, they are a royal pain to get them installed. https://willcoxcorvette.com/corvette...iece-set-68-82
