Default Pinion Shaft Coating

Does anyone know what the black coating is on the C3 pinion shaft's two bearing journals? I fine sanded the coating off and the diameters were reduced about 0.0003". Can the pinion shaft still be used?

My guess is that it is the heat treating and I wouldn't worry about the .0003. If you are worried you can get a Locktite product that will lock the bearing in place.

If you only took off 3/10,000, and the bearings will still need to be pressed on, don't worry about it. If you took off .003" you have a problem.

Do the bearings slide on easily, if so, don't use it.
