The vette is at the shop 'cause I heard a knocking sound and oil pressure was VERY low at idle. Talked to the mechanic today and he says he is "checking the rod and bearings" and he "found alot of gray
residue in the oil pan" he is researching that too. I'm supposed to get in touch with him tomorrow. Should I be expecing seriously bad news? Does anyone know what this might be? Thanks!
Most likely rod resizing and crank grinding. If it does need rebuild now is the time to do any mods you might have planned or wanted to do. I highly recommend a 383 kit since you can get them for around $800 balanced and it will add power and torque. If you have a matching numbers L-82 then maybe just get it rebuilt, but a matching l-48 might is a tough call. Non matching is a def in my book.
It's an L-82...numbers matching but I'm really not all that concerned with originality. I'm not terribly mechanical so I think I'd be hiring the work out. Where would I find the 383 kit and is it a huge job? I imagine it is...after all the motor needs to come out!
The L-82 is a great starting point and adding a diff cam won't affect the cars value much if at all so you can have a pretty powerful engine and not kill your resale. Bet threre are a few members who have moded their L-82's and can give more details. Find out what your mech thinks is wrong and then go from there.
