Can you post photos of the two possibilities? I doubt the A.I.M. will have the aftermarket composite spring, it might.

You put the spacer on the top of the spring. Since the mono spring is thinner than the 7- or 9-leaf steel spring, the spacer is there to put the spring back at its correct height position and to simulate the thickness of the original spring. Without the spacer, the spring would be shifted upwards, and the 4 spring attach bolts would be too long. The AIM will not show an aftermarket mono-leaf assembly stackup.
I'll shoot a couple of photos of my monoleaf setup on my '64 later today and post ('64 suspension is the same as your '76).
The AIM book shows how the car was assembled, how the parts go together in the car, was used on the assemblt line. If you are refurbished a car, it will be a great help. They also have on a disk for your computer instead of a book, I prefer the old way(some of us are like that).

Here's the composite spring installation when you are using a composite spring in place of the stock steel spring:
The spring has the hard plastic pads on top and bottom surfaces, and the spacer block goes on top of the spring to create the same installed height as the steel spring as noted in my post above.
The setup in the photo has a stripped mounting bolt hole and has a bolt and nut installed in one location - this is not a correct configuration for that bolt - there should not be a nut on the top of the left mounting bolt.
