You could pull the hub and replace the seal, that would be your cheapest way out but I'd be more incline to just buy a rebuilt unit that comes with some sort of warranty. You can buy a 4 seasons A6 compressor locally and not have any shipping or core issues either.
There are other compressors that can be put on your car but I don't know of any that would be a direct replacement. Maybe someone else has found something that'll bolt right in.

If your compressor is cycling a lot then you may be bouncing off the high pressure switch (if it has one) or off the low pressure switch. Over serviced or under serviced. Given you found it to be cold enough I would guess the high pressure if one is installed. This may or may not have contributed to the front seal leak.
I was all set to buy a new compressor for my 77 due to a leaking front seal. But when I started doing research into repairing the front seal I discovered it is more desirable to replace the seal if you have a good functioning compressor due to the lower quality of compressors that are available new.
I bought the tool to take off the clutch, watched a you tube video on replacing the seal, and jumped in. Wasn't hard and the pump held a vacuum on the system when I was all done. Haven't ran it yet but I imagine it should work.
