I would like to advance my timing a couple of degrees. Do I make the mark move closer to TDC or away from it. It calls for 8 degrees before. Thanks!
Good timing lights have a dial on them. Set the dial for the desired setting an adjust to "0". The best way to set the timing is to disconnect the vacuum line from the distributor and plug the hose. Then, run the engine to 3000 RPM and set timing to 36 degrees. Let it idol and recheck setting. Reconnect vacuum
Just want to point out that the method described by redwing is cuz he has a Lars dist that gives full mechanical advance at 3k...if your setup is different you have to set to 36 at the point where full mechanical is coming in...Lars correct me if Im incorect!

I'm not Lars, but you are correct. I seem to remember that stock L-48 distributor gives about 22 degrees advance BUT at +/- 4000 rpm. Best bet is to get a Lars kit then follow the instructions.
Great post guys, I've been planning on doing this myself. I have the kit for the dist. so 36 degrees is what I want at 3000rpm on my 350 by using the differend springs? How much vacuum advance do I want with 36 mechanical advance. Thanks guys...
Lars set mine up for 14 degrees vacuum advance. He also said that if the motor started to ping to run without the vacuum but I have not had any pinging using 89 octane gas. He said not to run more than 53 degrees total.
