Temp gauge ceramic bridge

Can someone tell me the purpose of the ceramic bridge in the temp gauge of our cars? Mine is broken in half, however the gauge works fine.

When I found this I just reinstalled in two pieces without issue....does it just insulate?

I've heard it referred as a ceramic resistor, but this makes no sense.

Hi Joe,
I believe the resistor is located below the ceramic bridge.

Thanks Alan,

I guess my question is more about the purpose of the white ceramic bridge above the resistor. Mine is broken in half but "in place". Bugs me that its broken, but the gauge seems to work fine.
My guess is that it isolates terminals and does nothing more than that.
