Default Magnaflow muffler options

I met with a muffler shop today to get a quote to replace the mufflers on my 69 big block 427. He is suggesting I go with the magnaflow straight through style performance muffler.

https://www.magnaflow.com/products?partNumber=11236

I have factory style mufflers off 2.5" pipe with original manifolds currently. The pipe and manifolds are in good shape. I am looking for better sound with some low end rumble and good sound at acceleration. I'm was also considering going with a chambered style muffler like the magnaflow XL or the flowmaster 40 but he recommended against it due to the resonance/drone these produce.

Does anyone one else run this style muffler on their c3?

This question has been asked many times, a quick search will pop up a few different threads.
I personally run 11 inch case magnaflows with an X pipe and sounds great on a big small block and not too loud. With a 14 inch case should still have a descent sound with a big block

Do you think there is a big difference between the 14" and 11" muffler? The muffler shop recommends the 14"

What size comes with the Corvette Central kit? It sounds perfect to me what ever they used.

Thanks, that part number does not come up on the Magnaflow web site so they must be a special model made exclusively for Corvette Central. It does say straight through style muffler so I think that is similar to what I am getting.

I bought my SS Magnaflow system from Mid America. Tossed or sold most of it but the larger diameter tail pipes are kind of cool and will just fit in the bezel. Sounds OK, not quite what I wanted, a little loud. I was on the fence about keeping the X-pipe, but sold it. It was very well made and might have reduced the sound but in the end I wanted accessibility.

It sounds like your muffler shop has made some good recommendations. That muffler is a popular size to upgrade to, and what we use on quite a few of our aftermarket exhaust systems. It should bring out the deep muscle car tone you are looking for, and have a bit more sound than the stock units! If you have any questions, feel free to PM us!

I have passed on the Magnaflow system as the outlets are 2" at the end.
I need the extra flow......
Going classic chambered four chamber system with two long under the car and two shorts at the end......with a Pypes X-pipe.

I have the chambered type Magnaflows with Hooker ceramic headers and also 2 1/2 pipes on my smallblock and it sounds AWSOME! No drone issues with the smallblock.

Flowmaster produces over a dozen different mufflers from mild to aggressive and our family of 40 Series mufflers are some of the most aggressive in the bunch. That said, there are other options for your 427, including our 50 Series Delta Flow mufflers, which carry a nice outside rumble but because of their 3 chamber design, these mufflers will produce very little noise inside the vehicle. Flowmaster actually has a 68-69 Corvette Force II system, specially made for the 427 engine that features kit-only versions of the 50 Series Delta Flow muffler. This bolt-on Crossmember-back system will give you some low end rumble on acceleration, but keep your cabin quiet enough to hold a conversation. Feel free to give us a call if you have any further questions at 707-544-4761.

Ron: Do you have any comment about additional back pressure created with 2"s at the outlet and 2-1/2" plumbing upstream as noted above? Thanks

I just switched to the Borla Pro XS muffler on my 78. I had Dynomax Ultra Flos before. I'm happy with the sound - it's another straight-through perforated-tube insulation-packed can like the Ultra Flos and Magnaflows. Pretty case. A little quieter than the Ultra Flos, but my Ultra Flos had some corrosion on the inlets and broken baffles.

I'd like a little quieter, but I'm afraid the next step down would be too quiet...

I'd recommend contacting the manufacturer of the system you're referencing. They'll be able to give you the best answer as to why it was designed that way.

As air travels through the system is cools...many cars out there may have 3" coming off the header but smaller tails its not really needed depending on your app. Unless you got a humungo motor doubt youll see one ounce of difference.
Bigger case you can fit under there the better

The 11's are a little louder, and perfect in my opinion. I had the 14" on mine as this was supplied with the CC system. I liked it but wanted a little louder so I switched out to the 11" ones. Magnaflows sound absolutely awesome in my opinion.

I have the Magnaflow universal mufflers on mine. Because I am making 600HP I went with the 14 in. You can save some money by buying the non polished version and paint them black. The mufflers get louder and louder the more you drive.
