Default ignition switch stuck 79 vette

while checking newly installed radio today I went to turn off ignition switch, it is stuck in the on position with the key in it still. It will not move forward or back and key will not come out. The key release shaft does not help.
Any tips or suggestions ? Thanks in advance
JB

Last summer same thing happened. I arrived at a car show, found a spot to park and the ignition key was locked in place engine running. Had no choice but to go home. I tried everything to get the key to turn with no luck. End result was a failed ignition switch on top of the steering column. All the contacts in the switch had broke apart and the switch was locked up and would not move.

That was one of the first problems with my '79. The solution was to replace the switch. Fortunately the switch must be in the "on" position to remove.

Things to watch out for are the plastic retainer/insulator over the lock clip--it will likely break when you remove. Also be extremely careful when moving (you don't have to fully remove) the turn signal switch--it too may have fragile pieces.
