I actually tried to do mine when I was working on the chassis and with the drive shaft out managed to get at the two rear clamps (one on the top of the hump and the other on the side near the yoke but couldn't get to the next ones up towards the front.
At one point I did get a crows-foot line socket on a swivel on an extension type of thing on the actual bolt head and then it dawned on me that I'd never get it back in if I took it out, so I left it.
Ended up pulling the engine and trans the next year and ran new cables then

I have had my '72 since '95 and the cable looks OEM to me.....had various transmissions in/out many times....engines also.....
my only comment is, that if I had to change that cable, the thing would be run up top under the rug/padding and through the firewall so fast it's a joke.....think for a second I go through all that BS for a CABLE change??? really???
I have done this and was successful in re-using all the cable clamps. I think I recall using a 1/4" drive swivel socket (7/16"?) And a lot of patience. I recall this being a very difficult job, especially when considering the added task of inserting the rubber seal/plug on the cable securely into the fiberglass tub. Now THAT was work.
