Working on another car in the household. Is there any trick to remove the shifter and reinstall it? The two bolts that hold it to the bracket are a pain to get to and not sure if there is a trick to this.
Its a pain with the trans in the way. I've done it. Actually I'll be under my car Thursdayor Friday if you can wait and I'll take some pictures and try to explain. In a nutshell you have to take all the brackets, exhaust hanger and trans mount off.
Here is the setup from my AIM. This is a 1971 4-speed.
Notice the two holes in the middle of the trans bracket #5. Those hole are for the front of the shifter bracket where bolt #4 on the shifter bracket picture.
Disconnect the shift rods from the transmission. Once this is done you can then push the reverse lever out of the way of the second bolt holding the shifter to the shifter-support plate. After this you should be able to fold/lay the shifter rods and shifter handle into a position that they will pull out from the front of the crossmember. (if you still need more room you can also opt to remove the shift rods from the shifter too - this is easily accomplished once the rods are free from the transmission as they will swing down so you can pull the spring clips)
If you remove the drive shaft, you will 100% more room to get your hands up there. Its still a pain but its workable. Also, as previously stated, removing the shift rods also lets up a whole lot more room.
Is it easier, in a car with removable crossmember(I believe my car was originally an automatic), to support the rear of the trans, and take off the xmember?
