Default new 502 stroker engine

just had 502 installed in 1970 coupe...very satisfied with the performance but I have hooker side pipes and the roar is ear deafening...also I don't mind drawing attention with a high performance car but I don't want a vehicle that is so ridiculously loud it is somewhat embarrassing......I have 4 inch hookers side exhaust and wonder if glass packs will help with the rumble.....or any other suggestion other than getting rid of the hookers as they are new? the engine is rated over 500 hp so I wont mind a somewhat restrictive exhaust as long as the db's drop....also if the exhaust is more restrictive, will it require carb adjustments?

A good heat insulation + sound insulation combo that includes door insulation could help.

But look out for Bait and Switch offers / "sales" that advertise far greater discounts than actually offered and involve lots of hidden fees when you go to actually pay. I'd go with a big named Corvette specialty shop, personally.

The 502 sounds amazing; congrats. How many ft lbs of torque? -What rear tires are you using to try and put all that torque to the ground? #jealous!

No need to ditch the side pipes, if nothing inside them they will sound like an engine with no mufflers and a 200HP 350ci would be way to load.

Others here have found a solution, they will probably chime in

yeah, the maxflows are a tad loud, a more restrictive baffle is needed if you want to quiet it down, and ~$250 inserts is way better in my eyes than a whole new system.

that and sidepipes look far too nice to remove.

Default Too loud

Agree with the above comments. I had the same issue. Mine did have the spiral inserts which certainly helped, but what made the most difference was removing the spiral inserts, then wrapping them with stainless steel muffler packing then re-inserting them. Now it sounds really good without being annoying in the cab. You can buy it at different densities in a roll which made it easy to put on. One warning is to use leather gloves. It has very sharp edges.

mildly off-topic, but..did you use the oil pan that came with the 502, or did you use an original corvette oil pan?

You can call classic chambered and let them know what you want and get some possible solutions.I have his 3 inch with insulation baffles but have not tried them yet. I am hoping to get enough noise reduction and not loose any power which is why I went in that direction.
Enjoy that 502!

lol, well I guess you could consider it a stroked AND bored 427 ....there you are both right haha.

As far as side pipes go, they are naturally going to be a bit louder seeing as they exit right beside your ear. I'm not sure what they have on the market these days for mufflers. It used to be you had 4 choices reverse flow, glass pack style muffler, JCL spiral baffles and open pipes. I chose the latter. The reverse flow mufflers will cost you quite a few ponies but are probably the quietest of the lot.

The Hooker Glasspacks are 1.75". They are pretty quiet but very restrictive. I have them on a 454 and I can feel the power difference between a 2.25" MaxFlow. The chambered exhaust mentioned earlier may be a very good option.

I must be deaf. I have a blown 540 with Hooker side exhaust and nothing in the pipes. My wife and I drive it often and it doesn't bother either one of us. We take it on drives of over 150 miles one way.

No free lunch if you want others to hear it you got no choice but to hear it too or run it out the back with quiet mufflers. Its a hot rod.

I agree 468 with open pipes and don't get me wrong it's noisy, but not nearly what you would expect with open headers. The side tubes baffle the noise down quite a bit.

Actually it's neither bored or stroked. A 502 in stock form has a 4.47" bore and a 4.00" stroke.

stephenmsweigart, I too have a 502 with Hooker side pipes and max flo inserts. It is loud. The glass pack inserts would quiet it down but will be restrictive. Probably cost you 40 or more hp.
