Hello,
Has anyone bought any of the half shafts from corvette central. They seem to be at a decent price, but there is very limited information about them, which always tends to worry me. I just had a U-joint let go at 100 Km/h and now I need a new one for my 1970.
Thanks
I bought new half-shafts from Ft Wayne Clutch. They came with new solid 1350 Spicer u-joints. I shot them with rattle can clear coat and they still look great.
Those Fort Wayne units look pretty nice and $300 for two. Or is it $300 each. Nope I see $300 each.
Crovette Central has the certified used half shafts for really good money. That may be the way to go for a single replacement for a stock or nearly stock car.
It looks like Bairs so far is the cheapest. I would assume they all come from Mid America anyway, so its just getting the least expensive + shipping to Canada.....
Looking at half shaft options for my 71 with a 500HP BB. Definitely going with 3" diameter, but how much does thickness matter? For example, Drag Vette's are thicker than Fort Wayne's, but also more expensive. I don't need a 900HP capable product for a 500HP car. Is Fort Wayne's .083" thickness adequate/safe for 500HP? I doubt I'll ever mod greater than 600 HP (famous last words, right...)

I am still running stock halfshaft on my '76 with a 500ish horsepower big block (over 50 1/4 mile passes w/ a 4 speed running 12.1 @ 118mph) and I never had any issues.
I suppose I could just replace the u-joints, but 45 yr old half shafts behind some decent power makes me wonder if a few hundred bucks isn't worth it in the long run. I'd hate to not replace them only to throw one around the back of the car, even if it was a a few years down the road. This is coming on the heels of another thread I started regarding a rear-end problem that seems to be half-shaft/u-joint related.
