Default 700 R Transmission

Gentleman, I broke my Detent cable on my 700 R. Can I still drive my car a couple of hundred miles without hurting any thing? I was told that it would just shift real fast when taking off from a stop. I just don't want to hurt anything else in the Transmission buy not being hooked. Thank's I Appreciate all of your help. Have a great Thank's giving & be safe on the roads. Gene

I would not drive it.

The cable is a TV cable that controls the oil pressure signal to the transmission. If it is broken, you will be at low pressure and might burn up the frictions.

Here is a good article from BTO to help make your decision.

You CAN drive it but you will likely ruin the transmission. The 700r4 is notorious for failure most related to a tv-cable that was not adjusted properly. Tow it. It broke? thats odd.

IT IS NOT A DETENT CABLE ... Throttle valve cable which regulates pressure.

If you drive it you will smoke the clutch packs and band

Thank's to you all for the info. I read the info from Johnt365 & that pretty much told me what to do with the problem in great detail. I parked it & plan on changing it this week. The cable was only 12.50 at Rock Auto parts. I think old age did the job of needing a new one. LOL Thank's again to you all for taking care of me, in my old age. Happy Thank''s giving. Gene

Read up on how to install it and how to adjust it properly. If the 700R4 did not originally come with your car, proper adjustment may be troublesome unless a packaged kit was installed on carb for that make of TV cable. Sorry, but setting this up correctly is VERY IMPORTANT.

Do some good web research so you understand what that TV cable does and how it relates to carb throttle action. If you get confused in setting it up or don't feel confident with your installation, continue this thread or start a new one on how to properly set TV cable.
