Default Frame and Undercoating Paint

OK. So I'm working on getting prepped to start my work shortly on my project car and I will be starting from the bottom up with brakes steering suspension etc. which I have covered in other threads. Since this wont be a frame off build I am wanting to find out what is recommended for the paint for the frame/metal components as well as the under side of the body where the fenders etc are exposed. Obviously I will be de-greasing, cleaning. wire brushing etc as needed to clean everything. Should I just come back with a good primer and some good semi-gloss or gloss paint or use the rubberized undercoating paint. I will at some point be replacing body mounts so I will be able to get to at least the tops of the frame at that point if not before.

I used a rust converter instead of primer and then gloss black paint for the rear which is as far as I have gotten....Turned out pretty good.

Hi MG,
People report good results with various paints for the frame itself.
Just how good the appearance will be and how well it will hold up depends mainly on how good a job you do in PREPARATION. So do as thorough a job in getting it ready to paint as you're able. No paint over rust or dirt.
I really believe that a semi-flat black gives the best appearance because it hides some of the frame's imperfections and is also fairly easy to maintain.
People report good results with SEM semi flat black, John Deere Blitz Black, and the industrial formula of Krylon #1613.
Really any of those paints can be used for small brackets and mounting plates that are riveted to the underbody, the parts of the suspension and running gear that were originally black, and the black-out in the wheel wells.
Originally the wheel wells had a small amount of undercoating/sound deadening sprayed into them so you may want to duplicate that, but I wouldn't add it anywhere else on the frame or running gear.
PREPARATION!!!!!
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Krylon 1613 on the frame, a-arms, radiator, sway bar.

I used the brush on POR-15 paint for the frame. Man that is some tough stuff.

I used the John Deere Blitz black for the semi-flat areas.'

Here is a picture of the underside of my hood sprayed with the John Deere paint...

If you won't be driving the car in the salt and rain, the por15 and rust oleum stuff will hold up good. I'm looking at a company I found. nhoilundercoating.com

My car will also not be a frame-off. First thing I recommend you do is blow out then vacuum out any rust/debris inside the frame. Then shoot at least two full cans of Eastwood's Internal Frame Coat on the inside. Do this before you install any pretty new suspension pieces because it will drip out quite a bit.

After I did that, I brushed as much rust converter in every accessible part of the frame and birdcage as I could reach. Then a coat of semi-gloss black. Mostly mine is in pretty good shape, very clean up front but plenty of surface rust toward the rear.
