i've always read that a 9'' lockup was best w/ that motor.....not really sure though

I would guess a stall speed of no more than 1800 RPM would be more than sufficent. I don't drag race mine, and have a 700R4, but that is the stall speed I am running and it works fine.

my father has a B&M holeshot 2400 stall in his zz4 powered hot rod. works really nice :yesnod:
