I just ran some heater hose between those tubes on my smog headers.

Rick,

Yes, the 80 does have steel tubes inside the exhaust manifolds. These tubes (about 2" long) should be removed before you plug the exhaust manifolds. Take a look at the link below.

Bend the end of a stout coat hanger wire into a right angle and snip the wire off so that you have about 1/8" hook in the end. Insert the wire into the manifold so that the "hook" can catch the end of the tube. Some tubes come out easy.... some need quite a tug.

You can get brass plugs at local autoparts/hardware stores. See link.

The A.I.M., page 352, shows that only the smog pump is driven by that belt.
