Remind me again of the proper way to raise a C3. Mine is a convertible and I remember something about leaving the doors open because of the body flex.
I need to work on the exhaust (again) and am going to put it up on stands for a day or two.
Also, what ways do you other guys (and girls) raise your vette? From side to side, or from front to back? What's the best place to put your jack as to stay out of the way of the jack stands?
No fair telling me you have a lift, but that is one of my future goals.
On my CE I crack the doors and remove the T-tops (of course you don't have to). I jack up the front under the front crossmember, and then each side under the frame where it goes up to the rear wheels. I use 2 jacks , one on each side and do it one "pump" per side and switch back and forth. taht way I can raise it pretty level
The "proper" way, as in service manual approved, is to place your jack on the side of the frame, and raise each of the 4 corners one at a time. I will sometimes position the jack in the middle (of the side) and raise the front and the rear wheels at the same time. I have no problem leaving my doors closed, but if I open them, then I cant close them once the car is up on stands. I just spent the last 3 days crawling under my vette. (I am sore!!! :) ) I drove up on ramps and then jacked up the rear - first placed it on some small stands, then lifted the rear higher to place it on the bigger stands. I am still very uncomfortable under the car..... always wondering if there will be any warning..... will I know the car is falling on me, or will I just ....... nothing! MJ
Always remember that when you get comfortable, That is the most dangerous time. Fear is your friend sometimes in that it keeps you on your toes and makes you double and triple check things.
I usually drive up on two ramps in front then jack the back and then put the jackstands under the front if I need to but usually just leave it on ramps
Just put a jack (with a block of wood to stop metal or metal contact under one side about 18 inches from wheel and enough room to fit stand under at teh chassis ends. Zip it up then do the other side. I then put the wheels Ive taken off under the chassis next to the jackstands so if it does fall off the jackstands the wheels will stop it falling on me if Im unfortunate enuff to be under the car.
Re opening doors and taking T tops off (giggle giggle) - Had a look at a vette chassis.? Unless its super weak thru rust it doesnt matter whether doors are open or not they aint gonna move if you have a solid chassis. If u dont have a solid chassis be very careful jacking it up !!.
Having felt the same "no-comfort" laying under the jack stands, I now put a stack of 2x8x10's under the car instead of the jack stands. It's rock solid and have had it up about 20". You can see one of the stacks of wood against the garage wall to the right of the 72 in the sig pic.
