Default Will this head gasket work??

I have new Trick Flow 64 cc heads, but my compression calculations are coming in at around 9.5 to 1, I would like to go higher if possible. I have a set of new FelPro 7733 SH-1 (steel shim) gaskets, which will raise compression by about .5 point. Will this gasket work with the aluminum heads???

I don't like steel shim gaskets as they don't have quite as good sealing properties as the others. In most cases, this is fine.

There are other thinner gaskets available. I'm running a Mr. Gasket Ultra Seal which is .028" and I believe that there is also a Victor Reinz (sp?) in that same size.

What is your quench? IMHO, it is more important to get your quench good (about .040) than it is to start swapping head gaskets for a compression ratio.

If done right, the steel shim gasket will work fine. I have used steel shim gaskets several time through the years and have never had one fail. I used the fel pro rubber coated steel shim gasket on mine this last time, but the uncoated will still be fine. Chevrolet recommends using an aluminum spray paint as a sealant, but the permatex copper spray on stuff will work good too. The most important thing is that you have good surfaces on both the block and heads. A smoother suface is what you want with these types of gaskets. Here's a link to my old thread about this subject. It contains lots of good tips and info for this. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=147534

No
Don't use the 7733 with aluminum heads.
Maybe the rubber coated 1094, be sure to block sand, or others suggested.

maybe i'm getting in over my head here but i'm thinking dissimilar metals will cause corrosion. sure it may seal fine but what will the mating surfaces look like if you pull it apart in 5-10 years? anybody know what the factory used on the L98, LT-1, LT-4?
i'm listening just to learn something here. (thinking cap is on :hat )

Think that is why Matt is suggesting not to use the steel shim uncoated gasket. I like the Mr Gasket one Chris A suggests and will probably use it on my 377 (unbored 383).

IF your heads are aluminum DO NOT USE A STEEL SHIM HEAD GASKET!!!! you will brinell the heads, making them expensive pieces of garbage. You need to use composite gaskets specifically made for Aluminum head/ iron block combinations, to allow for different expansion rates of the two materials.

IF they are steel heads, go ahead and use them, I have them on my engine to boost compression, they seeped oil into the anitfreeze for awhile but not any more.

Mike
i sorry to hear you threw away heads because you used a shim gasket and brinneled them to death :jester
I see the ads are working as i assume you are repeating something...
The brinneling could be caused by a composition gasket with a sealing ring, but not from a FLAT steel shim. More likely the uncoated shim gasket
will corrode and leak.
.
Now lets assume i want to raise c.r. by 1/2 pt.
i could mill(about $120, possible intake sealing problems may result) the heads and use a felpro 1010, 2 for $70, or try the $30 1094's and sand the heads. Worst case some years from now the gaskets fail. Maybe then i would mill the heads and if i was wrong and they were indented(brinneled) somehow, then i would mill to get a clean surface and raise the c.r.
Best case the 1094 seals fine and the problem is easily and cheaply solved
