I went out to start the 81 the other day and what do you know, I had a broken alt belt. So today, I decide to replace all 4 belts. Thought everything went great, started her up and everything was good. Then after a min or so, the battery light came on, when I looked at the back of the alt, the bolt or stud with wire to the battery (with green rubber ring around it) was broken. While it was running I moved the wire and it sparked, obviously not good. My question is, what do I need to do to replace the threaded piece or do I need a whole new alternator? Ive searched around the forum but nothing really answers my question. I hope this is a simple fix, although, the alternator may need to be replaced anyway. Thanks in advance.
If you are talking about the threaded stud that came out the back of the alternator that your LARGE red wire was attached to with a nut. If that broke off.
The only way to fix that is to take the alternator apart.
SO...it depends if you have an electrical shop in your area that can fix it and make sure it is OK....or go out and get one from a parts house and hope that it lasts.
You could buy the part separately that has that stud...but it depends on what that cost and you swapping it out ....versus...a rebuilt alternator.
