81 stock engine. Everything was working fine. Then the cruise stated being erratic. So i didn't use that. Then a few months after that the speedometer stated jumping around between 5 and 20 mph. After about two months the speedometer stopped working all together along with the odometer. what would be the order of debugging this problem?
1) Lower speedometer cable that runs between the transmission and the cruise control transducer.
2) Upper speedometer cable that runs between the cruise control transducer and the speedometer.
3) If both cables are fine the transducer is defective.
-------------------------
I'm fairly certain that the two cables have direct gear connection within the transducer thus making speedometer operation failsafe in the event that the vacuum portion of the transducer fails. Had those direct gears failed you would have lost both cruise and speedometer at the same time. A failing cable on the other hand could easily cause erratic cruise operation, then erratic speedometer and no speedometer when it broke.
Well she's coming out of storage soon. It was a mild winter. Wish I hadn't buttoned her up so tight :/ so it's time to tackle this speedometer issue. I was thinking of by-passing the transducer and foregoing the cruise. One cable $40. So does anyone have a link to good instructions on pulling out the old cables and installing just the one?
From the firewall to the transmission is easy. The hard part is under the dash. You will need to remove the HVAC duct on the drivers side for sure. IIRC you may find it is easier if you drop the steering column. I have done a few jobs under there and I usually drop the steering as a matter of routine. Its not that hard and it makes working under there much easier.

Thanks. Do you have any links to how to drop the steering column or a video?
