I went out to drive the vette to work today and noticed the brake pedal felt a little soft. I tried to pump the brake to see if helped, but it didn't. I still had some braking power on the car, but it was greatly diminished so back in the garage it went until I have time to check on it later. I did notice last week when I drove it, that it was pulling to the right when I hit the brakes. Any ideas what might be causing this or things to check first? I didn't notice any leaks on the floor, but I was running late and didn't have but a couple of seconds to make a quick check. First thing I am going to check is the brake fluid level when I get home.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Start with the basics such as brake fluid. Assuming that is good, I'd start looking at the pads and visually inspect each caliper and the brake lines for any sign of leaks.
Also check the rubber hoses (unless they have been swapped out) and make sure there is no bulging.
Visually inspect the rotors and make sure there is no scoring or unever surfaces.
If the above doesn't come up with anything, you should have the runout checked to make sure the rotors haven't warped which will cause air to get into the system and can cause both the soft pedal and pulling.
Joe,
Thanks for the info. I took a look at the lines, and fluid, and they all looked good, but when I pulled the wheel off the right front I found the problem. The pistons on the caliper were both leaking fluid so it looks like its time to either rebuild or buy a new caliper. There was brake fluid all over the brake pads and the inside of the tire. I checked the other three wheels just to be sure it wasn't happening on those as well and they all looked fine.
IMHO, if it's time for one, it's time for all. i would also agree with the brake lines. after running braided lines, i don't know if i'll ever switch this car back to rubber.
