I got all the bolts out of the headers excepts two. All of them were full of rust. I have two on the drivers side. They are the ones closest to the firewall. How can I get them off?
Okay, it is really stripped now. any suggestions now. I am thinking if I take a chisle and bust off the head of the bolt I can still take the exhaust manifolds off then then deal with the bolt. Don't really want to do that but I'm running out of suggestions. I am moving soon and need to get the car running. Maybe I should bolt it back together and swap out to headers when I move. I'll probably do that. I just don't want to put the spark plug wires under the motor when I am putting headers on and am going over the headers.
Had the same problem on rusty headers. Best way is to get the smaller socket and force (yes really force it !!) it on to your stripped bolt. use a long socket and you will probably have to hammer it on (ackward aint it !!). You are using the interference fit between the small socket and your bolt to allow u to move it. Failing that Mr Chisel meets Mrs bolt Good luck and keep us posted
Sears Craftsman has a specialty tool just for these situations.
Another suggestion would be using a Dremmel tool. If you can grind the head of the bolt down to the diameter of the bolt so that the header flange can be pulled away from the head, you could then use a pipe wrench on the remaining stub.
I think the Dremmel is a much better idea than the chisel. I am going to wait until I move to put on the headers. Oh Yeah, I don't have a Dremmel so I guess I tell the wife that if I don't get this tool and get the bolt out the car is undrivable.
