I have an early '77 and I've heard some people say, "77 Stingray" , but I was sure 76 was the last year they were called that....and wasn't it until the late 77s that they added the flag emblem to the fender? Mine doesn't have anything....so I'm not sure if I wanted to put the flags on or not...could someone help clear up my confusion?
Re: 77s not classified as stingrays, right? (tnt76vette)
Technically, "Stingray" dates back to the C2s. It more commonly refers to 69 through 76. I don't call the 77 "Stingrays", but the body style is all closer to the 76 than the 78, so....

You hear both sides of the story. The 77 in print by Chevy and other printed materials I have seen have described the 77 as the last of the Stingrays even without th ebadging because of the body similarities. The 78 above was not considered as a Stingray because of the change in style having the bubble window in the rear. I have ont seen but have heard of some early 77 Vettes having the Stingray emblem on the fenders. Mine is an early that has the alarm on the fender and the crossed flags. I need to check with the previous owner if it ever had anything else there. You will hear those that say yes and those that say no. All I can tell you is what I have read. :D

My 77 is a late model. It has the alarm in the door lock and crossed flags on the front fenders and in front of the hood. No "corvette" labeling in the interior at all. Just crossed flags on the horn button.

To hell with the resale value as original.
Whip out the drill and put a Stingray script on there - if that's what YOU want.
From the above posts, it sounds like a fender alarm switch would indicate
a Stingray script.
I'd put it on. The crossed flag emblems remind me too much of the era
that cars went to the plastic manufacturers. Metal + Chrome = Good

'63 -- '67 were badged "Sting Ray"
'69 -- '76 were badged "Stingray"
I've seen books with pictures of "'77s" with the "Stingray" emblems, but I think it most likely that it was a matter of poor editing that labelled those cars as '77s.
Everything I've ever read (even in those books) has said that no '77s ever had "Stingray" badges. No badges at all or Crossed Flags on the fender, YES; alarm switch on the fender or alarm switch integrated in the driver's door lock, YES; but "Stingray" badges anywhere, NO.
Many people (including me) think of all C3s as stingrays, even though they all didn't carry the official "Stingray" badge.
So, after all that, it still comes down to the fact that it's your car and your choice.

I have a 77 Vette with Stingray emblems on the fender.. Of course I bought them from Ecklers :D I consider my Vette a Stingray, and I don't care what others think! Besides the emblems look cool!!! :yesnod:
Re: 77s not classified as stingrays, right? (VettePower)
Sting Ray was a package where as Stingray was a body style. (correct me if im wrong) the Sting Rays were C2s and usually had the specific Sting Ray engine and C3s came along and they just threw some more shiny emblems on it (basically). in 68 there were no cars with stingray emblems. 69 was the firs "Stingray" so whatever you wana call it is up to you. i think GM only put the emblems on so dealers could say "We have this used 70 vette that is in your price range, but over here we have this brand new 74 Stingray Corvette..."
I dont have "Corvette" between my taillights... Am i driving a Opel Gt? nooooo. I believe the expression is "Shaved"
Re: 77s not classified as stingrays, right? (SLICKMAN)
People always ask me that, "is your 79 a stingray" i try to explain to them that they stopped "calling" it a stingray in 77 and after that they didn't have the decals on the side that said it was a stingray. Everytime i tell people this they get really confused. So now when people ask i just say yes :D
