I am in the process of replacing the radiator support/radiator with a Griffin aluminum. Judging from the overall abused condition of the old radiator, I figured I may as well replace the water pump while I'm in there :) I can't afford electric fans, so I will be using the existing fan for now. Can any of you kind souls identify what I now have and give me some suggestions on a replacement ? (BTW...helpful hints on "how to" will also be gratefully accepted)

Looks like the standard Vette water pump to me. Any auto supply should be able to look it up and supply you with a new one.
This is the 'short' style used on vettes. The one in the picture is has two outlets (not including the big one to the radiator). You can use either the 2 outlet or the single outlet as your only using one (one is plugged at the top of the unit). A single outlet unit will not need that plug. You can also check the flange for the amount of holes in it. There will be either 4 or 8 holes there.
So... go to the auto supply and ask for a water pump for your car....
it doesn't matter if it has one or two outlets.
if you get an 8 hole flange, any fan will fit.
but it has to be a short type unit for the vettes (they will know this).

On my 77 I used the replacement chevvy pump. (unless u have a bigger motor in there, the original pump works fine). Make sure you use a good anti freeze and change it once a year as this stops corrosion build up in the cooling system. This is what stuffs up radiators and engine blocks over time.

my cooling system bit the dust last year.
had the rad recored ... had the original water pump rebuilt. new hoses and belts.... no heat problems at all this year.... even stuck in traffic on hot days like during the woodward dream cruise

Looks like the pump I just finished replacing on my 79. Be sure to take the old pump with to make a comparison to the new pump. And if I were you, get a good pump, which means not the cheapest. This is not a job you want to do again real soon. I spent the extra money and got a brand new GM pump. It cost about forty buck more, but it's brand new and not a rebuild. :yesnod:
