Newbie here, My 1982 Corvette brake calipers need to have stainless steel sleeves inserted. Friend of mine advised that I needed to keep the original calipers and have stainless sleeves installed in them. I was wondering if I could just buy new calipers with SS already installed, and then use my original calipers for core. Would this hurt the collectability of the car or does it really matter?
There's a $60 core charge for each caliper. Be nice to get that money back for another project. I'm not that concern about the originality, but if I sold the car I was thinking that the new owner would be. The original calipers are not numbered, are they?

I went thru this same scenario this past summer with my 78 Pace Car calipers. I took one to Carlisle and had the vendor tech look at it, Sure enough, an original caliper with no sleeving and the original lip seals. Purchased sleeved calipers with the Delco Moraine logo and kept the originals. I have ten years to cash the cores in for $200.00!
Now, while removing them, they are messy! Pitted and in some instances the pistons are stubbornly resisting removal.
Hi Jack,
"The original calipers are not numbered, are they?"
At least in the earlier years, (68-72), the caliper halves had casting numbers on them that made them appropriate for certain years of production.
Sometimes a date stamp is seen on one of the clippers machined surface.
Whether any of that is enough reason for YOU to keep them I don't know.
Are you sure your calipers haven't already been sleeved? If they haven't been it's pretty amazing that they've lasted this long.
Regards,
Alan
