Default Rubber boot at fuel fill neck

I'm removing my fuel tank in order to replace the rubber fuel hoses and the anti spill valve (think that is what it's called). It's a 72. Do I need to remove the rubber boot to drop the tank? If so, how does it come off?

No need to remove it to drop the tank.
It's just pressed up against the underside of the rear deck.
It comes down with the tank.

I pulled my tank out to add an in tank pump for fuel injection. I couldn't really (by myself) get the tank out, it was feeling like it was stuck. I pushed it back in place and opened up the fuel door. I just pulled the edges of the rubber piece around the neck up thru the hole. Tank came right out then....

If you remove the fuel filler door and then remove the rubber boot, this will give you access to also remove the fuel tank filler neck, and that will give you a couple more inches of wiggle room when dropping the tank.
It's not a must, but does make it a bit easier.
