On my 1979 Vette there is a part that sticks out on the side of the motor next to the oil dip stick and oil filter, does anyone know what this is and what it is for. Notice it was bent a bit, not sure why. Please see the picture with red arrow pointing to the part I am asking about.

Here's the stud with the z-bar in place. The 'ball' is inserted in the end of the bar.

The stud is pretty 'hefty' so it would take quite a blow to bend it!

Is it possible that you bent it while removing the engine ?
I think you are right on, I bet that is exactly what happened. I found a place on line that had the part for $14 including shipping, real GM part. thanks
