Default 71 rear shock : lower washer

Went to replace my rear shocks, and one side didn't have a cupped washer on it.. just a nut.

I have a flat washer that fits..

is the cupped washer important, or am I fine to use a flat one?

the cup washer helps keep the rubber from being squished out.
don't over torque and it will be fine.

Hi A,
69V posted while I was looking for the photo! He's right!
You can bet that IF the General thought a flat washer was all that was needed that's what would have been used (save 20 cents per car!!!.)
Can YOU get away with a flat washer? probably yes.
Regards,
Alan

Probably someone has one they can send you and you can replace the flat washer then!

Also, the cup washer doesn't get installed as seems intuitive… the un-cupped side is AWAY from the rubber bushing!

can you just reuse one of the old ones? a lot of times when I do shocks, the boxes may be opened and/or a nut/washer falls out. I usually just reuse and old one in that case.

Hi W,
No, that washer/"retainer" is installed the correct way. It's certainly counter intuitive that's for sure.
The "cup" faces away from the rubber bushings in the shock absorber 'ring'.
The only thing I can think is the rounded shape of the cup puts added pressure on the shock absorber bottom ring, not the mount, as the nut is torqued.
Regards,
Alan

The 71 AIM, UPC4, Sheet A3 Item #7, Note B….." Assemble with flared end curving away from Item 6".

Item 7 is the "retainer" and Item 6 is the "grommet'.

The 300 mile ZR-1.

Hi Ernie,
That washer and the direction of the bolts for the air dam extension are 2 of the 'strange' things we get to think about!

MERRY CHRISTMAS to you if we don't speak again before the Holiday!

Regards,
Alan

It's all good.. I've got help on here and in most cases T knows the right answer, this one he blew. He has around 16 yrs experience but as you all can see, there is never a time to learn. The concept of the washer facing outward is to put pressure on the inside of the bushing causing expansion, if you put it backwards it will cause the bushing to shrink.
