The Best AND Worst Mods
HOW did this thread end up in the Time Capsule? Yes...we know it's old.
I need to visit the local bank and make a loan.
You members will save me a ton of headaches while adding a smile a foot wide to my face with the advice on best improvements

Exactly. On other Forums, this would be an active thread with 1700 posts over 15 years. Now that it's on the front page, hopefully people contribute more mods!

The very best mods I did on my 77 Vette was:
- Removing power steering and going back to factory manual steering.
- This winter, I removed power brakes, and went back to manual brakes, which I suspect is going to be equally good.
- Of course, putting a well built 406 SBC in my 77 is going to be a fantastic improvement.
- Composite spring with Bilstein shocks, and heim joint struts and steering pushrods
- Spreader bar in front - noticeably improvement in handling
The worst mods are had to identify, as I have been careful to NOT make too many changes. What I will say is that every time I stray from what GM did at build, there is a ripple effect of problems that have to be resolved. I have learned to think every idea out before actually doing it. Sometimes its simply not worth it. When I build the 69 Convertible, my intentions are to stick with the way GM built the car, with only a few exceptions.

my favorite mods so far overall
- going to a McLeod 5 speed. I had to switch to a hydraulic clutch, bleeding it is a lot of in and out from under the car since the reservoir is so small. Fabbing the master cylinder plate was a hassle. Had to shorten the drive shaft 3/8s IIRC.
- going to 3.70 gears from 3.55. Better off the light performance with less clutch slipping to get goiing
- sniper efi, no more pumping, just turn the key, wait for it to prime a few seconds and turn the key, starts all the time
- converting my existing discs to o-ring. Very simple conversion and no more leaks or bleeding
- upgrading to 17 inch wheels, but polishing the aluminum sucks
- swapping the rams horns for Hedman side exhaust headers. Still have the stock style pipes
- I bought the Modern Drive Line hydraulic clutch kit but because of the brake booster I had to mod the bracket. Everything else was great. I had to change the bracket so that it had a compound angle welded into the bend to fit around the booster. It took quite a while to get it right. Fun to build but very time consuming
- I had to buy a really expensive Lokar throttle cable mount to get the sniper to work with my drop base air cleaner. Then the stock pedal mount snapped at the firewall. I bought the small Lokar pedal to replace it, should have gone with the larger pedal. It works really well but climbing up unde the dash was a hassle to mount it
- I had to make an adapter to relocate the shift lever to the stock location. Again fabbing is fun but time consuming. THey do make a conversion shift lever adapter but they are stupid expensive for what they are
- the cost of trying to build a 427 and trying to find a crank for it. They are just hard to find without being cut in my neck of the woods

Heres some updates to my Mods that either changed them all togther or fixed the issues
my favorite mods so far overall
- going to a McLeod 5 speed. I had to switch to a hydraulic clutch, bleeding it is a lot of in and out from under the car since the reservoir is so small. Fabbing the master cylinder plate was a hassle. Had to shorten the drive shaft 3/8s IIRC. My 427 has over 500 ftlbs and it ate the McLeod up during the engine and clutch break in period. So I went to a TKX and bought an aftermarket shifter from Performance Parts warehouse which I believe is MDL modern drive line...https://www.ebay.com/itm/13444633700...Bk9SR6Su1qydZQ
- going to 3.70 gears from 3.55. Better off the light performance with less clutch slipping to get goiing Went to a 4.11....so much torque!!!!
- sniper efi, no more pumping, just turn the key, wait for it to prime a few seconds and turn the key, starts all the time When I went to my 427 the EFI just kept flooding it. It really hated my intake which was a stock aluminum dual plane. Got rid of it and went to tripower which I modded from vacuum to mechanical secondaries....WOW..https://www.youtube.com/shorts/N4BDrviAb4Q
- converting my existing discs to o-ring. Very simple conversion and no more leaks or bleeding. Havent had a leak since
- upgrading to 17 inch wheels, but polishing the aluminum sucks. I got tired of polishing the rims and they stopped making the dark chrome American Racing wheels so I went back to 15 inch with a 27 inch front and a 28 inch rear. They are Cooper Cobras that I made into to redline tires
- swapping the rams horns for Hedman side exhaust headers. Still have the stock style pipes. These worked great, upgraded to Ceramic coated for the big block. ALso went to HiFlo Wild chambered 2.5 inch pipes. They are loud but they sound awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdl-xL4dcXI
- I bought the Modern Drive Line hydraulic clutch kit but because of the brake booster I had to mod the bracket. Everything else was great. I had to change the bracket so that it had a compound angle welded into the bend to fit around the booster. It took quite a while to get it right. Fun to build but very time consuming Still works great. I moved the bleed hose up to the reservoir so I can bleed it from the top
- I had to buy a really expensive Lokar throttle cable mount to get the sniper to work with my drop base air cleaner. Then the stock pedal mount snapped at the firewall. I bought the small Lokar pedal to replace it, should have gone with the larger pedal. It works really well but climbing up under the dash was a hassle to mount it Only issue was the fitting aat he carb snapped, I had to buy a new one to replace it
- I had to make an adapter to relocate the shift lever to the stock location. Again fabbing is fun but time consuming. THey do make a conversion shift lever adapter but they are stupid expensive for what they are When I swapped over to the TKX the shifter I bought fixed this issue
- the cost of trying to build a 427 and trying to find a crank for it. They are just hard to find without being cut in my neck of the woods Got the 427 built, had one of the rod bearings de laminate so I had to start over..525hp and 535 ftlbs if I remember correctly, absolutely Love my 427. I could have easily made more HP but it would start breaking more stuff at that power. It tore up my tranny and the rear end would be next
