Default New spindle-old flange movement....?

How much is too much....They say a picture is worth a 1000 words in this case I think a video is better. Maybe all new spindles have this much play...? The old spindle feels pretty good, the new one seems to me to have too much play. What do Ya'll think....?

That's the poor quality of an imported spindle.

I'm sure it was an import at only $100...Will this cause me any issues...? I'll put less than a 1000 miles a year on it....Stock 350 and I don't drive hard.

Anyone else use these imports and seen this kind of movement....?

Torque it to the recommended setting, 100 ft-lbs I think, and it will be fine. Also get your end play as close to .001 as you can.
Hope this helps.

I'm going through this issue as well. Except my "noise" developed a bit more than two years after installation of rebuilt trailing arms.

Im going to remove the half shafts and re-torque the spindle nut (100lbs) and check out the movement.

When I drop it in and out of gear is sound exactly like a u joint clicking, but if I crawl under the car and have my beer assistant roll the car back and forth I can SEE the movement between the flange and spindle behind the nut. I chalk it up to crappy spindle during the rebuild, by a forum sponsor no less.

I agree. I would not be comfortable with that spindle. Not sure what the solution is - don't know if better parts are available, but when you consider the trouble and expense of rebuilding those bearings, I think its worth getting the best parts you can. What is wrong with the old spindles?

It's interesting that even GM had this same problem with 2005 to 2008 Corvettes and brought out a service bulletin for those years in late 2007. They described it as "a tapping or scraping noise." Their fix was to increase the torque on the nut from 100 to 160 ft lbs as it stated that: "this condition may be due to the torque on the wheel drive shaft nut relaxing over time."

Maybe I'll drop a tab of weld on it. Lol

id like to know how wide the grooves are on the OEM spindle vs the "new" one, to see the difference in the casting.

I have an an old spare set of T/A's in storage. 100,000 miles on them. Zero slop in them.

Maybe try my old flanges and slide them on the rebuild spindle and see what kind of movement I get.

Just need to get get the car out of storage. Few more weeks.

With that much play just one wheel hop or jack rabbit start and the whole thing will twist off. Its like letting the clutch slip off your foot at every redlight, IT will bust. CHINA CRAP send it back, the last person did and then you got it.

It's almost completely back together now....I'll report back in a couple of weeks after I get some miles on it....I did use Loctite 609 retaining compound between the flange and spindle.

No problems so far and no noise that I would expect it to make if it were loose.....That said I haven't put maybe 20 or 30 miles on it since I got everything back together.....Headed to Super Vette Saturday this weekend....That will put another 40 miles on it and I'll report back if I have any issues.

YEs please report back with an update (again).

Put about 40 miles on it yesterday and had no issues at all....After the trip home I shot the bearing housings with a temp gun and both read real close, right at 90 deg.

I put the loctite on both the spindle and flange and coated both pretty well. I'll have to check and see what number I used...It's made for this purpose.

I used Loctite 660. However you need to heat it up to disassemble.

Wee, I'm dropping the half shafts to replace the u-joints and tighten up the spindle nut. Can you comment on the goop you put in the splines and how its holding up?

I haven't put but maybe another 20 miles on it since the last report. No issues to report, I'll post a pic of the bottle of loctite I used tonight.
