My 79 does not have a tilt/telescoping wheel, just a standard wheel. My question is after getting the horn working sometimes when I turn the wheel and accelerate hard the horn blows. An embarrassing way to get attention when you get on it. Any ideas?
Remove your horn button and upper horn contact assembly and take it for a drive and see if the horn blows again. IF it does...you have an internal problem....which with no photos or description. I have no clue what it can be due to it is a standard column without photos.
OR...and it is possible...the wire that you are grounding when you press the horn button is actually getting a ground source from somewhere in teh car and it may have nothing to do with anything in the column. SO...disconnect the turn signal connector and see what it does. BUT...keep in mind you will NOT have BRAKE LIGHTS or TURN SIGNALS. I would advise you use your wiring diagram and remove the wire terminal from the turn signal switch end for your horn and leave it hanging there....so you have your BRAKE LIGHTS. It should be a BLACK WIRE...third wire from the end....if I am not mistaken.
Simple to find if you do not have a wiring diagram using an ohmmeter.
I had a similar problem. When i took the column out and apart, there's were two metal pieces that had fallen down the column: the clip for the turn signal canceling came and also the ( I forget the name for it) but the clip that is for the key buzzer. Somehow when i turned the wheel in just a certain way, the horn stayed on until I turned back. A few times it stayed on till i got home. insert emoticon here. Yeah, mighty embarrassing.
I hope it's a ground issue. In my case I knew there was something else wrong because the turn signal canceling didn't work. Hope your problem doesn't involve column surgery.
