Default 77 steering column

Hello,i have a 77 all original that was originally equipped with a non tilt/telescopic column & i would like to change this to tilt/telescopic. I have located one in a 76 stingray but have been told they are not interchangeable. Is this true & if so... Why?

Welcome to the Forum!

The 77 column is a one year only part, it does not interchange with any other year. The reason for this is that the 77 was the only year that the windshield wiper switch was incorporated into the column. On all other years, the wiper switch is on the dash.

The 77 columns turn up. They made 49,000 77's, and close to 47,000 of them came with tilt. I use to have a 77 T&T column, that needed to be rebuilt. I'll have to take a look around, I don't recall if I ever sold it or not.

You might want to contact Forum member Jim Shea (via PM) and ask if he has a solution, he's an expert on these. If there is a solution or a work around Jim will know of it.

Attached is an excellent paper Jim Shea put together on C3 Steering Column's.

Good luck... GUSTO
