Default Adding brakes lights and daytime lights

I'm thinking of eliminating reverse light lenses and adding 2 more brake and running lights to the rear of my 80 for a better warning behind me. Does anybody think this will add to much to the cuircits? I also want to add front day time running lights. Any ideas of a good set available on the market?

I added LED halo rings to my existing tail lights and backup lenses. I kept the reverse lights in the center also. I used new LED bulbs for the brake lights and backup lights so they are brighter. I put electrical tape over over one of the tabs on the brake light blub so they only come on when the brakes are on, and not with the parking lights.

They look better in person. Hard to take a good picture of something so bright.

For the rear, the "bubble light" kits that some people do this with no additions or changes to the wiring other than tapping into the outboard lamp pigtails for the new sockets that are installed in the inboard openings. A new flasher is included in the kit to handle the increased load. Otherwise your turn signals will flash really fast.

For maximum visibility, I like the idea of having a brake light up high similar to modern cars.
I've been playing with the idea of mounting a CHMSL from a C4 or C5 to either the top of the roof, or just under the roof panel at the top of the rear window.

I've seen some clever uses of LED strips integrated into the front grilles for DRLs. Practically invisible when not in use.
Look at this thread.

Kubs - Similar to what I plan on doing. You remember what size halos fit between the three screws? Did you use red or white?

I did the CHMSL from a C4 about a year ago. Found NOS one on eBay for great price. Install was a little tedious and nerve racking since ya have to drill mounting holes. It looks fantastic, is very visible, flows nicely with lines of the car.

I put one one my "78 a few years ago. I walked through the auto scrap yard until I found one that looked like it might fit inside along the rear window.
after some modification to the interior side trim I ran a wire direct to the brake switch, so it wouldn't blink if I used the turn signal.
And Yes, it is "RHD"

Here' another rear light solution- found these on Amazon for I think about $9. These pull really no power.

I haven't done DRL yet- haven't found anything that "looks" right....

Nice and thin-

I got rid of the reverse lights too- well sort of- rather I moved them.

Added a sequential flashers- also have the halos for parking

Also did halos up front-

And my hidden reverse lights-

I was hoping you would chime in. I really like your hidden reverse lights.
I have that on my to-do list.

Meanwhile, for those folks that don't mind a little "truck stop accessory shop bling", there are tag frames available with LEDs that can be wired into the reverse light circuit.

Here are the Halos I used. They are 80mm and use RED LEDs. They fit perfect in the brake light housing, but I had to trim around the the 3 screws for the reverse light.

https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...ard/1117/2649/

I also used black RTV to seal the inside and outside of each ring to reduce the amount of "bleeding" into other sections of the lens, and hold the rings in place.

For the brake light bulb, I filed one of the pins on the base of the bulb for the parking lights and covered it with electrical tape. This way the center of the lens doesn't light up when the lights are on, just when the brakes are on.

These are what I used for the brake lights. I got them in RED LED also.
https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...t-car/808/741/

These are the backup lights:
https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...car/1686/3947/

Also, you will need 2 of these flashers to allow the turn signals to work (one in the fuse panel for hazards and one under the dash for turn signals). The only thing I dont like about the flasher is it doesnt click so you have to look at the dash to make sure they are flashing.
https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...asher/781/835/

Hope this helps!

I'm trying to stay away from LED's in the rear. I was just wondering if I can stick with using 4 1157 bulbs on the brake light circuit and turn signals?

I do like the rear plate lights for reverse lights

Yes. You need to add 2 more tail light housings with 1157 sockets, and wire them to the existing 1157 tail light sockets. Should not add much more load to the circuit. Not enough to worry about anyway.

You certainly can use the 1157 bulb in all 4 places. Just don't forget to upgrade the flasher.

I think the flasher is only required if he is using LEDs, which he is not. The stock one shoul work with the extra bulbs. Am I wrong?

That's a good question...
My kit came with a new flasher and incandescent bulbs.
I installed it without trying the old one.
When I get home this evening, I'll see if I can find the old flasher and reinstall it to find out what happens.

I think they recommend a heavy duty flasher when you pull a trailer

I must have glossed over the "Heavy Duty" part. That would be the opposite of the LED flasher which requires less load. However, I can't see only 2 extra bulbs adding that much more load. Better safe than sorry I guess.
