My '76 L48 Auto has developed a "ticking" or "clicking" noise that appears to be coming from the tail section of the transmission. It increases with speed. The car shifts fine. Today I jacked it up, disconnected the DriveShaft, Speedo cable and gear and the noise is still there when spinning the yoke by hand.
Anyone know what this could be? Is it a serious problem or just some slop in the system from age? The car only has 83,000 miles.

Thanks!
Was your speedo bouncy before this? I'm wondering if your inner speedo gear may have cracked.
Otherwise, I'd say it's time to inspect the output shaft bearing.
Speedometer needle doesn't bounce it's smooth and steady. I did notice the yoke had a lot of side-to-side and/or up-and-down play when I was pulling on the drive shaft looking for u-joint play before disconnecting it.
It could just be a dry Ujoint cap. This wouldn't show slack at the onset,
and the short squeaks can sound like ticking. The frequency of the sound
should indicate whether it is coming from something before or after the
differential. Fast = tranny/ujoints/rear end. Slow = rear end/halfshaft
joints/wheel bearing.

Your output shaft bearing or tailshaft bushing is hosed. I'd replace both.
