Default Emergency brake wooooooes.....

Well I was wondering why my emergency brake never worked and found out why this weekend. Left side still had the rivets, so I drilled them out from instructions I got here on the forum (thanks guys) with no problems and everything looked good inside. Now the right side in another story. I noticed the rivets had already been drilled and bubba had put the rotor on not lined up with the holes to get to the adjuster. Well lucky I didn't need to get to the adjuster to get the rotor off because there was no adjuster, no brake pads, no springs....nothing. No wonder it had never worked. Now where can I get all the missing parts for my right emergency brake, springs, adjuster, retainers and all

Sounds like a previous owner went in there (maybe even with good intentions), went insane trying to get the brake shoe retaining springs back on, covered the mess over, and never thought of it again. I know I was very close to that point myself :yesnod:

I was surprised to see that Zip sells individual parts (e.g., adjusting wheel) for each side separately. I'm sure the other catalog companies do too, and you may even be able to get the parts locally (auto parts store / Chevy dealership).

If you have the time, energy, and money, it'd probably be good to do both sides at the same time. http://www.corvettefaq.com has a link to a great article about parking brakes that shows a "tie-it-up-with-thread-first" trick to get those brake shoe springs back on. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll look. I found it after many, many hours cursing at my springs

Check for free movement in the rear cable while you're under there. It can get pretty mucked up and be difficult to move through the shielding after a lot of years of picking up road crap & rusting.

Good Luck.

I rebuilt mine with a kit from Corvette Central. Pretty fair price and the parts are all stainless. Course it was a lot easier for me cause the trailing arms were removed. Doing it on the car is a dirtier, more back breaking job. When I disassembled the p-brake, neither side had springs, etc. Good luck.

If you buy the complete kit, spend the extra money and buy the all SS stuff. Do it once....and never again. The carbon steel "regular" stuff will rust/sieze over time. Chuck

This is basically what happened to me almost 2 years ago, LOL. One thing led to another and I ended up doing trail-arms, bearings, etc. Don't be surprised if yours needs additional work, as well.
