Weird Ignition Problem on My 82 CE.
The following is a slighted edited copy of a thread I posted on the NCRS forum a few days ago. Without any significant responses I thought I might try posting it here.
My 82 CE is having intermittent electrical and gas delivery problems. I have an in-line test light for checking plug spark. I went out after sunset so I could easily see if the plug wire is sparking/or not. No spark with the key in the 'start' position with the engine turning over. I released the key to the 'on' position, no sound (or spark). Moved the key to the off position a steady light (SPARK) AND BUZZING!! Both continued until I removed the negative post on the battery. If I put the battery terminal back no sound or light till I attempt to start the engine.
I did not see any gas being delivered during the cranking of the engine. The gas delivery problem has been on and off for about 4 years. The only thing I’ve not replaced it the ECU and the harnesses. This effort includes checking and cleaning all connectors including the rear grounds and ECU, load test the gas electrical harness and bench check the electric fuel pump before installing it. It runs for a while and it doesn’t start the next day. I’ll address the gas problem once I figure out the spark/buzzing problem.
I can use all the help I can get. Thanks In advance. Hugh
I'm a little unclear on this device you are using to test for spark. If you pull a plug wire off one of the plugs and insert a screwdriver into the end of the wire, while holding the insulated handle of the screwdriver and placing the bare metal of the screwdriver near anything metal on the engine, do you see a spark jump from the screwdriver to the engine? Do you have 12 volts going to the distributor verified with a test light or voltmeter?

I work alone so it is easier for me to insert one end of the in-line test light into the distributor and the other into the plug wire thereby being able to set in the car and turn over the engine and see if I have a spark or not. I will check on if I have 12 volts to distributor in that I assumed I did because the test light was on. Thanks Hugh
I use a sparkplug on the end of the plug wire that is touching the motor so that its grounded.then turn the motor over and see if its sparking.if you have spark add a little fuel.see what happens.I would clean fuse block contacts for the injectors.
