I was driving my 68 and noticed my temp gauge started bouncing all over the place. It would stabilize for a few seconds then swing erratically left and right the stabilize etc.. I have checked the wire connection at the temp sensor on the block and all seems okay. Any ideas if the problems from the sensor, the gauge or something else?
The gauge is only reacting to the input from the wire from the sending unit....OR the wire supplying power to the gauge itself....or the ground going to the gauge.
There is no way in knowing what the problem is.
The gauge cluster may need to be dropped out so the gauge can be tested along with all related wires.

i had that problem and the sensor had started to come apart. the center was spinnning around and would move slightly. Unplug the wire and grab the stud and see if it turns or wiggles.
The temperature gauge can only read what the input ohms to the gauge is. So, if the gauge is jumping around... Take the wire off the sender and turn on the key.. see what the gauge reads.. then ground it out and check it again.
It sounds to me as if your sender is failing or you have a short in the wire from the gauge to the dash unit.
