Please see attached pic, showing the bottom of my shock absorber as I try to line it up on the shock mount. I do not know what has happened here, I would think it has to be a bad shock mount (which is new btw). I absolutely cannot attach the shock like this. I replaced the shock mount because I fouled up the threads removing the old one (when I was preparing the trailing arm for removal and rebuild). Please let me know your opinion on this mess. Thanks

Here's the angle of the shock mount on my 71.
All the weight is off the suspension so it's dropped as far as it can go.
Remember the the trailing arm moves in an arc, (not straight up an down), so the strut rod must be able to follow it.

If he raises the trailing are to the approximate "normal" position when the car is on the ground - the shock mount should look "normal"
When I change the shocks I put a jack under the trailing arm and raise the arm to make it easy to put the shock in, also helps stop damage to the rubber in the shock.

You're right.
It's the fact that the strut rod must follow the t-arm's arc that makes the connection at the shock mount look 'odd' when the suspension is at it's 'limits'.

Here's the strut rod at the inner bracket… it needs to be to be able to 'twist' too.
Wow, the support on this site is Grade A+, thanks for all the responses and pictures. I finally got things straightened out. I took the mount off and discovered that while I was installing it, somehow at the point the flat area starts into the flat area on the tr, it tried to turn a fraction and that is what sent it going haywire. Very difficult to explain and photograph, but whew am I glad it's all good!
